Proofreading and Copy Editing
- Learn the difference between proofreading and copy editing. Discover the art of creating and editing clear, concise and error-free documents. This course will focus on proofreading and editing for newspaper, magazine and book publishing but will arm you transferable skills that are applicable to all written material. Individual and group exercises will help participants to master grammar and editing techniques discussed in the course. The course will comprise topics such as use of punctuation, active vs. passive voice, acronyms and techniques for eliminating jargon and wordiness.

Public Speaking and Speechwriting
- This course seeks to equip participants with knowledge and skills that can be useful in areas of communication that require speaking publicly to an audience. Its major premise is that a speech, or public address, is a moment of significance in an ongoing discourse. Although it allows the speaker an uninterrupted period of information transfer, it is the result of dialogue, should promote interaction and result in joint action. It is therefore a means of communication ヨ an interactive transference of meaning between individuals. The course promotes the concept that public speaking has a special role in advocacy as a means of garnering support by sharing information that will make audiences think, feel and do.

Radio Announcing and Presentation
- This course relies heavily on the reading of scripts and radio copy for announcing and microphone presentation. There will also be some written assignments. Each participant should bring a portable tape recorder with either a good built-in condenser microphone or an external microphone. (No micro-cassette recorders.) Each participant must submit a 30-second audio cassette or CD stating name and country and the reason for taking the course. This cassette/CD/file should reach CARIMAC by the May 7, 2010. Audio files in mp3 format can also be emailed. You must be a confident speaker of the English Language.

Radio Production
- Course activities include workshops intended to introduce participants to modern radio production equipment and techniques. The course will deal with the use of analog and digital radio consoles. This will include correct use of tape recorders and microphones; editing techniques; the production of recorded and live programmes, news and discussion programmes; commercials; music programmes and the application of sound effects.

- Case-based course which examines how social media is being used in public relations, identifies best practices and looks at methods of measuring effectiveness of these social media tools. Trouble shooting session.

WORKSHOP: Introduction to Content Management Systems
- The World Wide Web is fast becoming the primary means of communication in developed countries around the world. While the majority of its users are consumers of content there is a growing need for persons with the requisite skills to produce and manage this content. Content Management Systems were developed as a means of simplifying the production and management of web content. This three-day introductory workshop will prepare participants to create and manage websites based on content management systems, with particular emphasis on best practices, web safety and security and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). The experience gained from this workshop will provide the skills necessary to install, modify and manage websites based on Content Management Systems.
